Opposition to agricultural laws: Farmer killed himself by consuming poison in the ongoing dharna at toll plaza in Khatkar Kalan, Jind

On Tuesday night, 55-year-old farmer Palaram committed suicide by swallowing poisonous substance at the site of protest against agricultural laws at Khatkar Toll Plaza in Jind village. The farmer was involved in a dharna for three months. During the day, where he was engaged in serving tea to the people who came on the dharna. At night he used to sleep at the dharna site after having his food. On receiving information about the suicide of the farmer, the Uchana police station reached the spot and started investigation by taking possession of the dead body.

According to the police, there is no cultivable land in the name of Palaram, a resident of village Khatkar. That’s why he and his two sons take up land on contract in the village and do farming. Now his sons were handling the work related to farming, while for three months Palaram had gathered only on the ongoing dharna at Khatkar toll. During the day, he used to make tea there and drink it to the people who came to the protest site. At night, he used to take food there and sleep in the tents set up at the picket site.

On Wednesday morning, when other farmers reached the protest site and called Palaram sleeping in the tent, there was no response from inside. When people went to the tent and saw, Palaram had a box of poisonous substance lying near him and he was lying dead on the mattress. On coming to know about this, the farmer leaders who were managing the strike site reached the spot and informed the family members about it.

The farmers told that Palaram often used to talk that the government was not accepting the words of the farmers and he used to get upset by saying this. Uchana police station in-charge Ravindra Kumar told that the family members of farmer Paleram have been called. Further action will be taken only after recording his statement.
